Swans vs. Saints - Round 12 2018

AFL Player Ratings Based Review
Swans vs. St. Kilda 2018 round 12

Zak Jones
23 disposals  |  86%DE

  • BOG for equity impact, is running very hard to receive handpasses, is a designated kick and is delivering to options well. Significant area of improvement for him.
  • His contested ball work suffers, he isn't strong enough to hold opponents off and dispose. Gets caught too often for a player with his skills. As he learns to use guile and teammates to free himself his game will improve here.

Isaac Heeney
27 disposals  |  74%DE  |  1.1
  • Almost identical impact to jones, is becoming a consistent threat all over the field.
  • He attended only 14 centre bounces, as mature bodies come back into the side he will be able to spend more time around the ball as opposed to working all over the ground.

Lance Franklin
4.4  |  18 disposals  |  66%  |  8 marks inside 50

He had a good game that could have been great. His kicking since the injury has lacked the usual penetration, accuracy seems to suffer also. A matter of time and injury management for him to return to full fitness.

Callum Sinclair
29 hitouts  |  3.0  |  14 disposals  |  78%DE  |  4 marks

Another good game from the surprise packet ruckman. His workrate is impressive, and his awareness with ball in hand has improved drastically.

Tom Papley
2.1  |  14 disposals  |  92%DE  |  2 tackles

A rest and drastically reduced midfield minutes rejuvenated the sparkplug.

Gary Rohan
2.0  |  9 disposals  |  77%  |  2 tackles

The man’s performance remains a mystery from week to week.

Jarrad McVeigh
25 disposals  |  88%DE  |  3 tackles

He is in a rich vein of form, hitting targets and creating at will. His defensive work has improved with his fitness, long may that continue.

Jake Lloyd
29 disposals  |  86%DE  |  1 tackle
  • Second highest possession winner and a designated playmaker a solid game from a player reliable to a fault.
  • Only criticism is that his kicking is not at all creative, but he maintains possession and fulfils his role as the link between backline and midfield. My kingdom for Malceski.

Luke Parker:
25 disposals  |  64%  |  2.1  |  4 tackles

  • His attack on the ball and the man set the tone. Playing a role that allows him to use his skill as a forward to pile scoreboard pressure on.
  • Main challenge seems to always be his ball use on the outside, this game was par for the course on that front.

Josh P. Kennedy
31 disposals  |  67%DE  |  6 clearances  |  1.0

Leading ball winner for the Swans, but overall an average JPK game for impact, his movement around stoppages is muted in comparison to previous seasons. He is having his role changed and the burden of winning every contest his being spread, this and the calf injury he has battled through seem to be coming to some resolution as he finds his dominating best form.

What's up with Dan Hannebery?

We decided to use a little bit of light time series analysis to see if we could try to answer the question what is going on with Hannebery. Statements from the club and the player have been that he is on the mend after fighting a bout of osteitis pubis through the 2017 season and that his recent poor performance has been form and not fitness related. Let's see what we can see. Some assumptions: A single catch all metric is the basis for our little analysis, we're using Final Siren's ratings . We will make the assumption that form is a simple 22 game moving average of rating for  Hannebery since his debut, roughly corresponds to a year. Deviation from the average will tell us if a game is 'good' or 'bad'. We'll normalise that deviation against the standard deviation of the ratings, to get how many standard deviations away from the norm a given performance is. Greater than 1 standard deviation is the arbitrary line we draw to determine 'goo...

Round 13: Sydney Swans(H) 10.12.72 def. West Coast Eagles 7.15.57

Based on AFL Player Ratings Heath Grundy 23 disposals  |  91%DE  |  7 marks The milestone man put in his season best performance, taking intercept marks and using the ball well. An astounding success coming from the rookie list, doesn’t seem to be slowing down at 32. Josh P. Kennedy 28 disposals  |  68%DE  |  1.2  |  6 clearances The captain led the way against a midfield that was stymied by Natanui’s ruck dominance. Seems to be moving a lot more freely at the stoppages, where he spent most of his time, a shift from the last few weeks. George Hewett 24 disposals  |  88%DE Uses the oppositions best midfielder as a scaffold for his own game, a softer tag on Shuey, then drifted to Yeo as he started to dominate late in the game. His inside ball winning and delivery is improving out of sight. Zak Jones 20 disposals  |  80%DE An impactful if wasteful ...
